BOOK RELASE PARTY
Can you believe it? We have published our very own book!
The Secret Lives of Third Graders is an anthology of our best personal narratives that we wrote this autumn.
The students chose their favorite story to nurture into full-fledged drafts. We worked on zooming in on a small moment, and revising our writing to include an interesting opening and as much “voice” as possible. Also, they thoroughly revised their drafts based on our mini-lessons on craft elements like using descriptive words, writing detailed character descriptions, varying sentence length, including personification and metaphors, adding dialogue and adding powerful endings.
We also explored several strategies for generating entries in our writer's notebooks: mapping our heart; writing from a photo or special object; writing off of our literature connections; and creating idea lists. We read from mentor authors such as Judith Viorst, Julie Brinkloe, and Ralph Fletcher's thoughts about revising our writing and he inspired us to become "revision surgeons" who bring our writing to life on the operating table.
Finally, they illustrated their stories.
